What is PrEP?
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication for people at risk of getting HIV through sex or drug use. The medication prevents HIV by stopping the virus before it has a chance to take hold in the body and spread. To find out more about PrEP, text us or schedule an in-office or telehealth appointment online today.
PrEP protects you from getting HIV. They may consider you a candidate for the treatment if you engage in activities that put you at risk of HIV, such as:
Having sex with someone who has HIVHaving sex without condomsHaving a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)Sharing needles or syringes for drug useSharing needles for drug use with someone who has HIV
The team performs an HIV test before prescribing PrEP. You can’t take this medication if you have HIV.
What is PEP?
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) means taking medicine to prevent HIV after a possible exposure. PEP should be used only in emergency situations and must be started within 72 hours after a recent possible exposure to HIV.
